Writing

I have over a decade of experience writing music and pop culture criticism—starting with Consequence (formerly Consequence of Sound) where I was a Senior Staff Writer, and I’ve also been published in Time, Noisey, and, most recently, St. Louis Magazine. I have interviewed artists, reviewed new albums, reviewed classic albums, and wrote about live shows, festivals, and movies. You can find my entire Consequence bibliography here, and below are some of my favorite articles.

Friends in All Places: Garth Brooks Is Back - review of opening night of Garth Brooks’ (record) 11-show sell-out residency at the Allstate Arena in Chicago to kick off his comeback tour in 2014.

The Clash’s Top 20 Songs - made a lot of enemies with this list, but I got to listen to nothing but The Clash for a month. Winsome/losesome.

20 Criminally Overlooked Post-2000 College Rock Albums - as a former college radio junkie working at 88.7 KTRM at Truman State, this one was great to put together; plus I got to work with three of my favorite writers on staff at Consequence at the time: Sasha Geffen, Katherine Flynn, and Steven Arroyo.

Ranking: The Ernest Films from Worst to Best - I mean…come on…I got to watch every Ernest movie, and then write about it. What’s not to love about that?

Orion Music + More 2013: 12 Loud Snapshots - That time I got to travel to Detroit to cover Metallica’s Orion Music + More festival on Belle Isle. All photos by me (including of Gogol Bordello above)

Interviews with Tim Kasher of Cursive and The Good Life - One of the benefits of writing for a major music publication is getting the chance to talk to your musical heroes; in this case Tim Kasher…and I did it twice!
